As the 4th of July holiday fast approaches, we would like to remind area residents of the legalities and penalties for the use/possession of fireworks. We do this in an attempt to gain compliance through communication rather than enforcement. This time last year, area law enforcement agencies were inundated with calls of large explosions throughout our community tying up officers and expending resources due to the actions of few.
This year, we ask that before you light that fuse, you consider:
1) You could be cited and/or arrested for using or possessing fireworks with fines of up to $2500.00 and one year of incarceration.
2) Due to the extreme dry conditions, your fireworks could cause great damage to yours or others property.
And finally, if none of this compels you to obey the law, we plead that you consider our area veterans. The Village of South Jacksonville is home to many Military Veterans, both active and retired. The explosions caused by large fireworks can cause mental fatigue and can trigger PTSD as well as many other problems to the very people who fought for the freedom that you’re celebrating.
We are asking for your help in addressing this problem.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
